30 Questions to Ask a Daycare Director Before Enrolling
Tours are designed to show you the best version of the facility. These questions cut through the presentation to reveal what daily life actually looks like — and what your monthly cost will really be.
Safety & Licensing (Ask First)
- "Can I see your current licensing inspection report?" Every licensed center has one. If they hesitate or say it's "not available right now," that's a red flag. Look for the number of violations and whether they were corrected. Zero violations is rare — one or two minor findings is normal. Multiple repeat violations is not.
- "What is your staff-to-child ratio, and is it met at all times?" Ask specifically about opening and closing hours. Many centers are technically in ratio at 10am but short-staffed at 7am and 5pm. The ratio they quote should match your state's licensing requirement — if it doesn't, ask why.
- "How are outdoor areas supervised?" The answer should include specific staff positioning, not just "we watch them." For larger outdoor areas, ask about head counts before and after outdoor time.
- "What is your emergency evacuation plan, and when did you last practice it?" Licensed centers are required to practice evacuation drills monthly. Ask when the last one was. If staff can't remember, that's a problem.
- "Are all staff CPR and First Aid certified?" State requirements vary — some require all staff, others only lead teachers. Better centers certify all classroom staff regardless of requirements.
Staff Quality & Retention
- "What is your annual staff turnover rate?" This is the most revealing question you can ask. The national average for childcare workers is 26-40% annual turnover. Under 15% indicates a well-run center with competitive pay. Over 40% means your child will have a new primary caregiver every few months — damaging for attachment and routine.
- "What qualifications do lead teachers have?" Look for CDA (Child Development Associate), associate's or bachelor's in early childhood education. States with higher licensing standards (Massachusetts, D.C.) require more credentials, which correlates with better outcomes but also higher tuition.
- "How do you handle staff absences?" Do they use floating staff (employed by the center) or bring in substitutes from an agency? Floaters who know the children are far better than random agency substitutes. This matters more for infants and toddlers who are sensitive to unfamiliar adults.
- "What training do staff receive beyond initial certification?" Quality centers invest 20-40 hours/year per staff member in professional development. Ask about specific topics — behavior management, developmental milestones, inclusive practices.
Daily Operations & Communication
- "What does a typical day look like for my child's age group?" Listen for a balance of structured activities and free play. Red flag: "They play all day" (no curriculum) or "We follow a strict academic schedule" (not developmentally appropriate for under-5s). Good programs describe a predictable routine with flexibility.
- "How will I know what happened during the day?" Daily reports (paper or app), photos, parent-teacher conferences, and an open-door policy are standard at quality centers. If communication is limited to "They had a good day," you'll never know if your child is struggling or thriving.
- "What is your discipline policy for toddlers who hit or bite?" The answer reveals the center's philosophy. "We redirect and use natural consequences" is age-appropriate. "We use time-outs" is debatable for under-3s. "We don't tolerate that behavior" without explaining the approach is vague enough to be concerning.
- "What happens when a child develops a fever or symptoms during the day?" Look for: immediate isolation, parent notification within 15-30 minutes, a specific fever threshold (typically 100.4°F), and clarity on when the child can return (usually symptom-free for 24 hours without medication).
- "What is your food allergy protocol?" If your child has allergies, this is critical. The answer should include staff training, epi-pen availability and authorization, separate food preparation surfaces, and how allergies are communicated to all staff (not just the classroom teacher).
Costs & Financial Policies
- "What is the total annual cost beyond monthly tuition?" Registration fee ($50-300, usually annual), supply fee ($100-200/year), activity fee ($100-400/year), technology/app fee ($5-15/month). These can add $300-1,500/year to the stated tuition. See our cost lookup for your area's typical rates.
- "What is your late pickup policy and fee?" Most centers charge $1-5 per minute after closing time. At $5/minute, being 15 minutes late costs $75 — per occurrence. Some centers have a 3-strike late pickup termination policy.
- "Do you charge for sick days, vacation days, or holidays when my child doesn't attend?" Most centers charge full tuition regardless of attendance because they're holding the slot. Some offer 1-2 free vacation weeks per year. Ask specifically about closures — if the center is closed for 10 holidays, that's 2 weeks of care you're paying for but not receiving.

- "How much notice is required for withdrawal, and is there a deposit I lose?" Most centers require 2-4 weeks written notice. Some hold a deposit equal to one month's tuition. If you need to leave quickly (job change, relocation), understand the financial penalty.
- "When does tuition increase, and by how much historically?" Most centers raise tuition 3-8% annually in January or September. A center that increased 12% last year will probably do it again. Annual increases above 5% should be justified by documented improvements in staff pay or programs.
Red Flags During the Tour
- Staff on phones during classroom time. One occurrence might be a personal emergency. Multiple staff on phones signals a management problem.
- Children watching screens during your visit. Some screen time for preschoolers is normal (15-20 minutes of educational content). Toddlers and infants parked in front of a TV during a tour is a red flag.
- The outdoor area is empty or locked during outdoor play time. Ask why. Outdoor play is a licensing requirement in most states — if they're skipping it, what else are they skipping?
- You're not allowed to visit unannounced after enrollment. Open-door policies are standard. A center that restricts parent access has something to hide.
- High-pressure enrollment tactics. "This spot won't last" or "We need a deposit today" are legitimate for centers with real waitlists. But if the center seems empty and the director is pushing urgency, question why they have availability.
Questions Only for Infant/Toddler Programs
- "Will my baby have the same primary caregiver every day?" Continuity of care is critical for infant attachment. The best programs assign a primary caregiver to each infant.
- "How do you handle feeding and nap schedules for infants?" "We follow the parent's schedule" is the right answer. "All babies eat and nap at the same time" ignores individual needs.
- "Where do infants sleep, and what is your safe sleep policy?" Infants should sleep in individual cribs (not swings, bouncers, or car seats) on their backs. Ask to see the sleep area.
- "How often are diapers checked and changed?" Every 2 hours minimum is standard. Ask about their diaper change procedure — gloves, sanitized surfaces, hand washing.
- "What is the transition process from the infant room to the toddler room?" Good centers have a gradual transition (1-2 weeks of visits to the new room). Abrupt moves on a birthday are stressful for children and signal a factory-model approach to childcare.
